Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center - Ansonia, Connecticut
Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center - Ansonia, Connecticut
Tucked into the Connecticut countryside is an opportunity for you to take some time out of the busy everyday life and visit nature. The Ansonia Nature and Recreational Center offers you the opportunity to walk the two and one-half miles of nature trails and see what is just waiting for you to discover. The park is owned and operated by the city.
The park was once a small family owned dairy farm and encompasses 104 acres of wooded hills and grassy fields for you to truly enjoy. You can visit the two acre pond and sit and ponder the wonders of nature or walk through the grasslands and explore an upland swamp. See if you can identify the New England flora and fauna that you will see along the way. Spend some time in the butterfly/hummingbird garden where not only the colors of the plants will please your eye but the beauty of the butterflies and the quick darting of the hummingbirds will delight your senses.
There is an award-winning woodland wildflower and fern garden by the visitor center to make your visit there even more enjoyable. The Visitor Center is open from 9 - 5 daily with the exception of major holidays but even if they are not there, the garden will still be worth taking a few minutes to see.
A portion of the park has been dedicated to recreational fields such as soccer, baseball and softball. There are also several acres reserved for community gardening which not only helps with providing fresh food to those that participate but also gives them an opportunity to get to know each other and share stories and ideas of gardening. Bring the kids along when you come to the park and let them play in the large playscape area designed especially for younger children.
As you visit the park you will have the opportunity to take some nature oriented educational opportunities. The focus of the park is for educational purposes on nature related issues. Nature-oriented classes are provided to school age children on weekdays with evening and weekend
programs directed toward adults and their families.
Visits to the park are free to everyone from sunup to sundown.
