Thomaston Station and Thomaston Shop Restorations

Thomaston Station is presently undergoing a major restoration by members of the Railroad Museum of New England. Built in 1881, the station sits on a 1.11-acre site on East Main Street in Thomaston, CT. Not only is the station building being restored, but outbuildings, a control tower and display tracks are being revamped, as well. You can view some examples of the vintage railroad equipment owned by the Railroad Museum of New England on the display tracks, plus browse a terrific selection of railroad-themed souvenirs and gifts at the Thomaston Station Gift Shop. 

Another exciting restoration by the Railroad Museum of New England volunteers is taking place at the 11,700 square foot Thomaston Shop. The Shop features two through tracks, work areas, an inspection pit, and will be fully insulated, heated and modern. The Thomaston Shop is not open to the public, but it is an exciting and essential part of the Railroad Museum of New England’s operations.

The Naugatuck Railroad

Originally built in the mid-19th century, the Naugatuck Railroad has a long and fascinating history. You can learn about the Naugatuck Railroad on your visit to the Railroad Museum of New England, plus plan to take a ride on board this historic railroad.

Scenic Naugatuck Railroad trip excursions combine beautiful views of the Naugatuck River Valley with information about the history of the Railroad. Trains depart from Thomaston Station. Your 20-mile round trip excursion will last approximately one hour and 15 minutes.

You’ll travel in beautifully restored vintage 1920s coaches on the Naugatuck Railroad. Some of the highlights of your journey include views of the Mattatuck Forest wilderness, the historic Brass Mills of Waterville, and the spectacular Thomaston Dam.

A ride on board the Naugatuck Railroad is an entertaining and educational experience any time of the year.
