Hammonasset Beach State Park is a terrific destination in Connecticut for a day at the beach or an extended camping trip. There are two miles of beautiful sandy beaches and many activities to enjoy here, and the amenities on site make camping at Hammonasset comfortable and fun.

If you like to play games or sports and enjoy staying active at the beach, you’ll love Hammonasset Beach State Park. You can play bocce or volleyball on courts set up for public use, and horseshoes are also available. There are paved trails where you can walk, jog or rollerblade in the fresh sea breeze, and there is a boardwalk at Hammonasset Beach.

Hammonasset Beach State Park is very large, and there are plenty of grassy picnicking areas located near the beach. A children’s play area and Bingo are available, and there is even an amphitheatre where movies are shown. Hiking and bird watching are two very popular activities visitors enjoy at Hammonasset.

Visitors can participate in all of their favorite ocean activities at Hammonasset Beach, such as saltwater fishing and scuba diving. Carry-in boating is allowed, and this is a great place to swim and build sand castles. There is plenty of room for flying kites at Hammonasset, too. You can also collect shells and bring your binoculars to spot ships and boats passing through Long Island Sound.

Anyone interested in learning about the habitats and natural environment at Hammonasset Beach will want to visit the Meigs Point Nature Center located here. Exhibits focused on birds and other animals as well as plants and geology offer interesting information about this unique area along Connecticut’s coast.

You will see a variety of animals native to the surrounding area at the Meigs Point Nature Center, including snakes, crabs, fish, turtles and amphibians. There is a daily reptile show and a Touch Tank is available seasonally. Nature walks, presentations and other special events are also held at the Nature Center.

There are more than 550 campsites available at Hammonasset Beach State Park campground. You will have easy access to the beach as well as concession stands, dump stations, a camp store, showers and restrooms if you tent here. Hammonasset is a family-friendly campground. Although there are a large number of sites, reservations are recommended for popular holidays such as Memorial Weekend.

Whether you choose to spend a day, a weekend or several days at Hammonasset Beach State Park, it’s a terrific place to relax and enjoy beautiful natural surroundings. Although it is a very popular public beach, the large amount of open areas and the length of the beach ensure there is plenty of room for everyone, even on busy weekends.
